What are the symptoms of unresolved trauma?

Here is a partial list of reactions to trauma and abuse.

Silence, or denying; minimizing; or rationalizing the impact of the event.

Confusion and anger about the lack of accountability for the perpetrator, whether it was reported or not.

Panic attacks: heart palpitations; trembling; chills; chest pain; nausea; dizziness; feelings of smothering or choking; fear of losing control, going crazy, or dying.

Mental health problems: feelings of worthlessness, hopelessness, shame, depression, anxiety, guilt, fear, rage and fear of being touched, losing time and confusion.

Physical problems: chronic pain; immune related disorders; gynecological disorders.

Behavioral problems: problems in relationships; sexual dysfunction; poor work history; problems with the law; physical or verbal abuse of children and partners.

Addictive behaviors: substance abuse; eating disorders; gambling; compulsive spending; compulsive saving; sexual promiscuity or sexual anorexia, internet porn and high risk behaviors.

Suicide ideation or attempts.

Homicide ideation or attempts.
