Do you need EMDR training?
There are many options for training if you're interested in using EMDR in your practice. If you've never had any experience with EMDR, you'll need to start with EMDR Basic Training. In the US, Canada and South America this is completing an EMDRIA approved program and 10 hours of EMDR consultation. The standards for training in most areas of the world have training requirements similar to EMDRIA's standards.
After you complete basic EMDR therapy training, you can continue on to get EMDR certification. Becoming certified in EMDR requires that you have at least 2 years in your field of mental health. It includes further approved consultation of 20 hours, conducting a minimum of 50 EMDR sessions with at least 25 clients, demonstrating an advanced skill level, and a commitment to continuing education with EMDR CEUs. (Note: certification is only available in the United States.)
Approved Consultants are EMDR therapists who have been practicing EMDR for at least 3 years, with at least 300 sessions and 75 clients. 20 additional consultation hours are required to ready the clinician to provide EMDR certification training for other EMDR therapists. (Note: in the United States, certification is required before reaching the status of Approved Consultant.)
At the highest level of education, a clinician can provide Basic EMDR Training at one of the many EMDR training sites around the world. The EMDR Institute and EMDR(HAP) are the most prominent providers of EMDR Basic Training.
Our therapists have been trained by the rigorous professional standards set down by the EMDR International Association (EMDRIA). Please make sure your EMDR Basic Training program has been approved by EMDRIA. The list of approved training programs is available here.
